Overcoming Stress
Six Easy Ways to Beat Stress by Working with Your Body and Your Mind
A Self-Help Help Guide for Busy Persons
by Kim O'Shea
Will show you how to do it!
It's easy, it's working - it requires only a little bit of your time.
We all suffer stress from time to time. Sometimes stress gets out of control and causes serious illnesses and accidents.
Our ancestors had excellent ways of dealing with stress. If a dinosaur attacked, they ran. If they had no food, they went out and hunted. They used their fight or flight mechanisms without even thinking about them. Modern man often does not have the ability or knowledge to release stress.
Our instincts often tell us to run away from a frightening situation but our pride forces us to stay. This immediately allows stress to build and start showing itself through physical reactions. Tense muscles, quick breathing, butterflies in the tummy and headaches are an indication that stress is present.
The important thing to realize is that a certain amount of stress is actually helpful to the body. We were designed to react to stressful situations but modern man has lost touch with his natural beginnings and no longer has the release valve of fight or flight readily at his disposal.
"Overcoming Stress" - Six Easy Ways to Beat Stress by Working with Your Body and Your Mind - is designed for busy persons who want reduce stress NOW and not elsewhere in the future.
"Overcoming Stress" contains a series of quizzes to help you figure out your stress levels. It also has a series of self help tips that you can employ straight away to reduce stress and increase energy.
Stress is an abnormal condition that disrupts the normal functions of the body or mind. No two people are affected in exactly the same way, or to the same degree, but most people living in our highly industrialized society suffer from its effects at one or more times during their lives. Symptoms range from mind headaches, occasional bouts of insomnia, overall restlessness, digestive problems, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation and diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Measuring Your Stress Level
If you've been wondering what degree of stress you live under, here is a quick way to get a fair estimate. Dr. Thomas and Dr. Richard Rahe composed a table of events and the amount of stress they cause. The most interesting feature of this table is that the people they interviewed actually told them, how they could rate specific events for the stress they cause, so this is human rather than a medical appraisal of the degree of stress those events caused As you get used to certain changes in your life, they become less stressful, so these ratings will not be entirely accurate for you. If, for example, you take a vacation only every five years, you might rate it a 25 instead of a 13. The common starting point used was a standard rate of 50 for marriage for all the people interviewed.
The combined total of both positive and negative stresses in the past few months will give you an idea of your current stress level. Keep in mind that people have varying stress-handling capacities and this table does not take into account such regular stresses as recreational drug use, alcoholism, chronic illness, allergy, battering and random stresses such as car accidents, contest winning to the dreaded tax audit. This is presented as information only and should not be used for diagnostic or treatment purposes.

Some physiological changes that take place in the body when a person is confronted with a stressful situation:
- The digestive process is shut down as secretions are diverted from the stomach to the heart, muscles and lungs. The mouth and throat become dry as a result.
- Insulin is released into the blood to provide fuel for the muscles. Prolonged stress may result in diabetes as the body fins itself unable to regulate its insulin production.
- The thyroid releases hormones into the blood to increase metabolism to provide extra fuel for the heart, lungs and muscles. Prolonged over production from the thyroid gland may lead to Graves disease.
- The blood thickens to help stop wounds bleeding but over time this can lead to heart attacks and embolisms.
- The heartbeat quickens pumping more blood faster around the body to send increased energy to the muscles. Prolonged racing heartbeat can lead to damage to the heart muscle.
- Cortisone is released into the blood to help the body fight off allergic reactions. High levels of cortisone in the blood can lead to weakness in the immune system.
- Stress needs to be addressed in as many ways as possible as modern living is very stressful and our bodies are not equipped to deal with this.
